Renowned American author William Zinnser once said, “Memoir is how we validate our lives.”
Every chance I get, I encourage my friends to validate their lives by committing their life story to paper. Unfortunately, way too often, their immediate response (after a sweeping eye roll and a loud snortle) is, “My life is soooo b-o-r-i-n-g, it makes taking my dog to the groomer look like a trip to Disneyland!”
Yet in truth, everyone’s life story is infinitely fascinating. Each person’s life is unique, woven from an individual set of variables — genetics, birthright, millions of decisions (deliberate and impulsive) and uncountable chance situations, circumstances, events, ups and downs, twists and turns. And through it all, everyone forms a distinct perspective of the world around them and to the history in the making that they have witnessed.
With Zinnser’s quotation in mind, I urge you to consider your family, as well as generations yet to come, and write the story of your life for them. Leave them a first-person accounting of your dreams, your achievements, your experiences, your philosophy, your wisdom. Your story will become your legacy that your loved ones will cherish and will allow your descendents to know you. I encourage you to record it now … while you still have time.
Please think about writing your story and then visit my Contact page and send me a note. I will respond within 24 hours to arrange to chat with you about the options available to you in producing your legacy piece. I look forward to hearing from you!
